Mir Hossein Mousavi issued a statement proposing a referendum, and more than 800 activists have also supported this statement.
Holding a referendum has several prerequisites, none of which are fulfilled in the current situation.
First, we need to know what a referendum means. A referendum means a direct vote of the people.
The prerequisites for holding a referendum are: 1. Freedom of parties 2. Absence of political prisoners 3. Absence of arbitrary supervision.
The first condition for the freedom of parties: Currently, there is no party structure in Iran that allows for freedom of parties. Most of the parties (monarchist or republican) that form the opposition to the Islamic Republic are abroad and are currently unable to operate and participate in the referendum, so the first condition practically does not exist.
The second condition is the absence of political prisoners: This condition needs no explanation, and the conditions of prisons and political prisoners are known to everyone. Therefore, the second condition does not exist.
The third condition is the lack of discretionary supervision.
According to Article 177 of the constitution of the Islamic occupying regime in Iran, any reform or referendum is subject to the approval of the leadership, and principles such as the authority of the jurist and the Islamic nature of the system are two unchangeable principles. The effects of supervision in choosing the type of government after the 1957 uprising are in the memories, how the mullahs declared the Islamic Republic a majority. In the size of the elections, fraud and engineering of the results have also been promoted, whose brilliant masterpiece, which is still remembered by everyone, is the 1988 elections, where the proposer of the referendum (Mir Hossein Mousavi) is still in custody, and it is not understandable how this person expects a correct election to take place under the supervision of the Islamic Republic.
In fact, holding a referendum under the supervision of the Islamic Republic is an attempt to regain legitimacy for a system that is itself the cause of the current crisis.
A referendum in the heart of tyranny means repeating deception. That means false legitimacy, that means buying time for incompetent people.
The real solution is fundamental and structural change of this occupying and terrorist system, not its reform. A referendum in the Islamic Republic is a big mistake.
A referendum is meaningful when the Islamic Republic has stepped down from power, parties and people participate in it with complete freedom, there are no political prisoners in the country, and the transition process is carried out under the supervision of international organizations, not under the control of the mullahs.
